Summary

As the fifth outing in the series, Killzone: Mercenary is the first of the titles that brings the first-person shooter action to a handheld. Thanks to a modified version of the engine behind the PS3's Killzone 3 and PS Vita's power, Mercenary looks as good as its console brethren.

As the name suggests, Mercenary shifts the story from the travails of the ISA infantry and over to the titular guns-for-hire. When the only chain-of-command goes directly from you to the man with a caseload of Vektan dollars, questionable loyalties and less regimented missions make for fresher, more colourful game.

The missions take place along-side some of the events of prior Killzone titles. From the ISA reclaiming Vekta to the nuking of the Helghan capital, Pyrrhus, Mercenary tantalises fans with an interesting perspective on events played in the past games.

In addition to the classic "twin sticks" controls common to most shooters, the Vita's touch screen is used in performing mêlée attacks and interrogations, though it's kept simple by following a few prompts to swipe the screen. Similarly, hacking involves tapping matching symbols to open secure doors and computer terminals. Players can also sprint and control sniper scope zoom by tapping and stroking the back touch pad.

The game has a broader range of "load out" option that its predecessors. With an array of primary and secondary weapons to purchase, plus slots for grenades, armour and Van-guard support gadgets, you can handle pretty much any situation. How a mission is fought is at the player’s discretion; stealth, measured combat, run-and-gun or a healthy mix.

With this being a Killzone there is, of course, a multiplayer option for players to take on up to seven opponents, making the game an investment that will pay off long after the campaign's been completed.
