Summary

Afro Samurai is a platform fighting game from Namco Bandai, loosely based on the Manga and Anime of the same name.

The game is rendered in cel-shaded 3D, that gives it an incredibly effective comic book style. The result is one of the most visually stunning games ever seen, and the style is particularly well suited to the storyline and subject matter of the game.

The game itself is a fairly straightforward free-roaming fighting game, similar in style to Prince of Persia and Ninja Gaiden. The story goes that whoever can become Number One and don the ceremonial headband will be granted powers of a god, and will rule the world. But only Number Two can challenge Number One. Because of this, the Number Two position is under great competition, and changes hands frequently often before the holder gets a chance to challenge Number One.

Afro's father was Number One until he was killed by a gunman called Justice. Afro witnessed this as a child. In the game, Afro Samurai is now an adult, and he is also the current Number Two. The game follows his adventures as he attempts to find and challenge Justice, and become Number One. As Afro progresses towards Number One's mountaintop keep, the Empty Seven Clan sends wave after wave of agents to attemtp to kill Afro and take his Number Two headband. Players get the chance to try and defeat Justice, using a combination of sowrdplay, hits, kicks and blocks.

The game features the voices of Samuel L Jackson as Afro, as well as Kelly Hu and (Hellboy) Ron Perlman. Although the title is visually stunning, it is extremely heavy on blood and gore, and features depictions of nudity that make it well deserving of its BBFC 18 certificate.
