Summary

For some people, 2D gameplay is still where it's at, even in the early noughties. Alien Hominid (AH) on GBA is precisely the kind of thing that gets the 'no 3D' crowd all excited, and with good reason. At the time of its UK release on home console in late 2005, Alien Hominid had been downloaded in its original flash form more than 13 million times. It's a platform shooter in the best tradition of Metal Slug and the like, only with added colour and 'out there' cuteness.

While out for a ride in its new spaceship, AH crash lands in front of the earth's FBI headquarters (is there another branch?) and narrowly escapes with its alien hide intact. AH must find its spaceship and get off the rock before its vicious human enemies find it and cart it off to Area 51. Along the way, AH relies on its deadly melee skills and advanced weapons to outsmart the ever-cunning enemies who want to probe it for alien secrets

The little fella from another planet can jump, shoot, ride enemies and carry them, and seven levels of power-ups are available. The explosions are enormous, the bosses are too, even on GBA: so enormous in fact that the camera has to zoom out to fit them in. This is a game hand-crafted by people who clearly love the fast, simple action of old. If you like your shoot 'em ups uncomplicated and quirky, Alien Hominid really fits the bill.
