Summary

Sonic the Hedgehog’s big news in 2005 for SEGA, and the well-loved Japanese games giant has much in store for Sonic in the future: a next-gen Sonic game on Xbox 360 and PS3 is in the works; Sonic will be appearing in an all-new DS platform title soon; and the Sonic-on-surfboards racing title Sonic Riders will grace the current generation of consoles soon enough. But some fans, while looking forward to a Sonic future, crave a Sonic present. And for that they will have to make do with Sonic past. Sonic Mega Collection brought some of the best loved Sonic Megadrive titles to present day living rooms. Now Sonic Gems Collection rounds up some of the lesser known glorious moments from Sonic’s career and bundles them conveniently onto one disc for you to enjoy.

Six Game Gear titles are included: Sonic 2, Sonic Spinball, Triple Trouble, Sonic Drift Racing, as well as sidekick spin-offs, Tails Skypatrol and Tails Adventure. But the real stars of the piece are the three other titles that are included.

Sonic the Fighters was an arcade classic and, as you might expect, a 3D fighting game. As well as the great one himself, it also featured the ever-growing cast of supporting characters: Tails, Espio, Fang, Bean, Knuckles, Amy and Bark, all ranged against the constantly evil Dr. Robotnik. Also included in the fantastic threesome is the racing spin-off Sonic R. But best of all is the reappearance of one of the most beloved moments in the blue hedge-beast’s history: Sonic CD. The Mega CD-only release followed Sonic through more than 20 levels and involved a fair amount of time travelling, with each level differing depending on whether you visited it in the past, present or future. It was a true classic. If you missed any of the games, or if your Megadrive gave up the ghost a long time ago, Sonic Gems Collection is the perfect place to go for a bit of nostalgia.
