Summary

You never need an excuse to develop a racing game - it’s a genre that is so popular that no matter what the developer comes up with, it’s going to be liked by someone, somewhere. Gran Turismo is loved by millions, as is Mario Kart, and following somewhat in Nintendo’s footsteps is Simian Industries’ Beanotown Racing for PC.

Riding around in a series of custom-made ‘karts’, players are charged with competing in a cartoon-style racer with nine other racers across six distinct courses that match the style of the comic. There are 10 characters to race with, boasting a selection not just from the Beano comic, but from The Dandy too. These include Plug, Bea, Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx, Desperate Dan, Roger the Dodger, Brain Duane, Korky the Cat, Gnasher and Bananaman.

But as a game, Beanotown Racing is obviously inspired by Nintendo’s Mario Kart series. The cartoon-like 3D locales are reminiscent of Mario Kart’s 64-bit outing, and each racer comes armed with a plethora of weapons and power-ups to make the experience more challenging and certainly more interesting.

But we have to say that what sets it apart from any other kart offering is its mischievous attitude. The game boasts the same chaotic humour as the comics throughout, and it’s this that will make it most appealing to fans of the comic book equivalent. Beanotown Racing is there to be enjoyed, so... enjoy it.
