So, how come this took so long to happen? Characters from grand old UK comic strip The Beano are to star in their own video game, courtesy of developer Simian Industries and Sheffield-based publisher Zoo Digital, and about time too.
It could have been one of two obvious choices – a platformer or a racing game? The developer plumped for the latter, and Beanotown Racing is due for release on PC next month. Featuring characters from not only The Beano but The Dandy too, Beanotown Racing features the usual staples of racing titles – Time Trial, Championship etc., and the omnipresent unlockables and upgrades as you progress through the game. What really grabbed our attention and tickled us was the selection of vehicles and weapons available to the characters. Brain Dwane drives a Smart Car, of course, and Bea – the mini-menace – drives a motorised pram with nappy gas as the special weapon. Poo! We can almost smell it from here.
Zoo Digital tells us the game will be available from November 7. Looks like the ideal Xmas gift for the 20-something, PC-owning comic book guy in your life.
