Summary

Famed for its official Formula One games, video game behemoth Electronic Arts is making a shift from the norm this year. In addition to other F1 regulars, the company is releasing an F1 racer that focuses almost exclusively on the career of a single driver. And that’s you.

In this edition, players don't assume the role of real life drivers; you’ll be creating your own driver and competing against them.

F1 Career Challenge is set across four years of Formula 1 from 1999-2002, during which time, your goal is to become world champion for at least one season. But, like Gran Turismo 3, players can’t simply pick up the first F1 car they come across and embark upon a successful season of Formula 1 racing. You need a license to prove yourself as a F1 class driver and to do that you must pass a series of tests that cover every aspect of racing and cornering you can think of.

Once you successfully obtain your super-license, you’re then free to sign up with a team and compete for F1 glory. And in typical EA fashion, F1 Career Challenge comes complete with genuine statistics and events from all four seasons from 1999-2002; the only difference is that you’ll be among the leader boards as well.

The racing itself has also been improved over previous Formula 1 games. The AI routines for each of the drivers is slightly different and is designed to reflect their real life driving behaviour, which means they can and will make mistakes. The overall level of realism in F1 Career Challenge is admirable and as a game it is very appealing, and rightly so. F1 Career Challenge 2? Maybe next year...
