Hard to believe, but it’s looking increasingly likely that there will be no F1 2003 forthcoming from Electronic Arts this year. EA’s F1 games have been a highly playable bunch over the years, but they’ve not differed too much from one another, despite the leap to next generation platforms. F1 Career Challenge (working title) is set to change the, erm, formula. It’s still officially licensed by the FIA, which means 100% authenticity is guaranteed, from the names of the cars and drivers, through to the racetrack dimensions, right down to the liveries of the respective teams.
"Consumer feedback told us that real innovation was needed in the Formula One space", says Executive Producer Matt Webster. "In our desire to deliver the strongest Formula One experience to date, we have stepped up to the mark and are now developing the first ever multi-year licensed Formula One game where you can build your racing career across four seasons."
The key phrase here is ‘your racing career’, as F1 Career Challenge now features the option for the player to enter the competition under their own name rather than competing as one of the existing F1 stars, thus giving them the opportunity to select their own helmet and suit design. And of course, if you have the talent and are brave enough – you can see your own name at the top of the leader board instead of Schumacher’s. What a refreshing change!
F1 Career Challenge is due for release in May, for PS2 , GameCube, and Microsoft Xbox.
