Summary

These guys have got to be part of one of the longest ongoing feuds of all time, so what better concept for a beat-em-up than the comic violence of this classic cat and mouse scrap. Which is precisely what War of the Whiskers is: a pure and simple fighting game with a heavy emphasis on action, inspired by the long-running TV show.

Shying away from the multi-button combos and tactical strategies of your average beat-em-up, the game focuses more on emulating the frantic chasing around and the 'in your face' violence of the cartoon. The premise is simple: pick from a selection of nine characters (that also includes such luminaries as Spike the Bulldog and Tom's mate Butch) enter into one of the game's familiar arenas, and proceed to batter each other with an amusing variety of objects.

Each of the game's arenas is designed to offer a wealth of options with regard to running, escaping, or attacking your opponent, being filled with things like furniture, buildings, work tops, and various hazards like electricity fields and iced floors. They're also fully destructible so the fights can turn into total war zones as you throw each other through windows, doors and other breakable objects.

War of the Whiskers is extremely faithful to its cartoon inspiration in the way that it's simple, action-packed and a whole lot of fun. It may not offer the depth of play yearned by hardcore beat-em-up gamers, but if it's instant action and over-the-top entertainment you want, then you'll not go wrong with this game.
