Summary

As the online community continues to grow and expand, competition amongst developers, particularly in the role-playing genre, becomes stronger. Final Fantasy XI and EverQuest have made waves in the industry, as will Wolfpack’s latest offering - Shadowbane for PC.

Suffering numerous delays and setbacks before its eventual release, Shadowbane is certainly not a rushed title, and benefits greatly from the additional development time. It’s a game that charges players with surviving in a near post-apocalyptic world in which competition for valuables and death is rife. A fantasy strategy game, the player’s objective within Shadowbane is to build an empire as best they can and crush any competition using any means necessary. And in typical RPG fashion, this is usually done through the use of weapons and magic.

On the face of it, Shadowbane is very similar to other well-known RPGs, with players viewing their game world from a third-person perspective. You’ll roam Shadowbane’s massive environments armed to the teeth wherever possible and encounter myriad opponents.

It may sound simple, but there are also many intricacies that need to be mastered in order to make your mark in this online world. An extensive guild system helps manage the political and social aspects of this MMORPG, which plays host to member voting, guild ranks and titles and a deep allegiance system. There’s even a unique coat-of-arms design tool for the more creative RPG gamer. Complete with multiple character classes, character customisation, a comprehensive magic system and a polished interface, Shadowbane will be remembered by its players for a long time.
