It's 2002, we're in the new millennium, and all the futuristic racers seem to have all but disappeared. In fact, only now has one such game made it onto Xbox, courtesy of Curly Monsters, and it's called Quantum Redshift. WipEout, eat your HearTout.

Set in the early 22nd century, Redshift features a new organised racing tournament of speed and courage on hi-octane circuits spanning the world. Gamers must choose from any of seven unique character pilots before being challenged to display a rare combination of raw racing skill to achieve ultimate victory. However, as players progress through the game, more characters and tracks become unlocked, providing even greater challenges for them.

Before a race, characters are equipped with a special ship and weapons. Each character has a counterpart nemesis, whose only goal is revenge through taunting, tormenting and attempting to sabotage the pilot at every turn. Each arch-enemy plot, ranging from political adversaries to estranged lovers, develops through cut-scenes and animations throughout the game. The importance placed on defeating, and even humiliating, the character's nemesis is designed to please both racing and action gamers. It works quite well, but it's not what makes Redshift the game it is.

What's appealing about Redshift is that it gives gamers the opportunity to command the most extreme, speed racing machines seen on Xbox. Travelling at speeds in excess of 650mph with no graphical slowdown and a real sense of speed is thrilling. In addition, the vehicles are equipped with highly advanced offensive and defensive weapons systems, allowing characters to attack each other with everything from plasma bolts to tidal waves, a la WipEout.

It sounds good, and it is.
