Summary

Management simulators are varied, to say the least, and while we may come to expect all kinds of games to be thrown our way, software houses still manage to surprise us. This time it’s Singularity and Xicat, with the release of Cycling Manager for PC.

While not entirely original in structure and gameplay, its theme is certainly unique. Allowing the player to participate in an interactive career within long distance cycling, gamers are able to experience the complete life of the sport, from beginning to end.

There are menu screens and stats screens aplenty, and races can be viewed in full 3D complete with a number of camera angles. But there’s more to Cycling Manager than just watching your employees slog it out in the south of France. Your job is to create a polished strategy before each race. In a similar way to other sports strategies, you must determine how your cyclists will race. You must decide when to attack and when assume a relay strategy. A good offence is often the best defence, but the reverse is also true in Cycling Manager.

Statistically, the game is accomplished. There are 60 teams, three divisions, and over 1000 cyclists all eager to do you proud as a manager. Cyclists have been given personalities, and all have a variety of statistics. Three modes of play that comprise of single race, season and career help to increase the already extensive longevity of the game.

As far as management games go, Cycling Manager offers an ample supply of originality, interspersed with challenging and though-provoking gameplay. Think wheels and you’ll be fine.
