Although most famous for its seemingly never-ending procession of Army Men games, 3DO has a fair amount of experience in the role-playing genre. The Heroes of Might and Magic series is a successful franchise that is continuing to explore the boundaries of the genre. Now released on PlayStation 2, The Quest for the DragonBone Staff is the most advanced instalment to date, in all respects.

In a world where darkness reigns, the King's fate rests solely with the champion that can lead an army in search of the most powerful weapon the world has ever known, the titular staff. This warrior must be powerful as both a fighter and as a magic user, and above all, must return victorious. The prophecies tell of such a warrior, the one who will save the world from an age of blight and destruction, restoring peace and serenity to these ancient enchanted lands. You are the chosen one. Do you have what it takes?

As a role-playing game, it comes as no surprise that most of your journey will be spent exploring the surrounding four continents in your search to uncover the DragonBone Staff. When put together, the pieces of map you find will reveal the hidden location of the staff, but don’t expect this to be a walk in the park. You will encounter many foes on your travels. It is here that you will enter a combat arena in which you must use all available tactics and resources to influence the outcome of the battle in your favour.

As the most recent instalment of the series, and on PlayStation 2, The Quest for the DragonBone Staff looks amazing. The game is complex, but addictive, and the urge to master the mechanics of the game is great. You’ll soon find yourself lost in the world that is Might and Magic.
