Many would say that the Japanese RPGs infiltration into the Western video games industry is responsible for the mainstream popularity of the RPG in the UK. But there are some European RPGs that can be equally popular. One such recent release is Infogrames Technomage. Originally released for PC, the epic RPG has now made an appearance on PlayStation.
As far as Technomages plot is concerned, the game is one hundred percent completely unoriginal. In this adventure your home world of Gothos has (without warning) come under attack. And guess what? The fate of civilisation depends upon you, the one and only Melvin.
Yes, its not the best story, but as you play the game you will discover just how twisted and intriguing the plot becomes. Either way, the game looks quite lovely, thanks to the Sunflowers development team. Environments are varied, highly detailed, and there are lots of them. They may not look as lush as the PC version, but other than texturing and resolution, they are the same game.
Typical to the RPG genre, character development is very important, and this is demonstrated well in Technomage. As well as uncovering plenty of history about the lead characters, there are also 50 other non-playable characters to interact with. Eight end-of-level bosses and hundreds of puzzles help ensure that Technomage provides a great challenge to anyone. All the typical role-playing elements are there, including an extensive library of weapons, items and magic.
With over fifty hours of gameplay, Technomage is one of the PlayStations more epic releases. Its not Final Fantasy, but its well worth it.
