Summary

Although many would say that the Japanese RPG’s infiltration into the Western video games industry was responsible for the mainstream popularity of the RPG in the UK, others would rightly argue that on the PC platform such games have always existed and have been popular with their target audience. Proving this statement and extending the PC RPG to a wider audience, Infogrames has released Technomage for PC.

As far as Technomage’s plot is concerned, the game is one hundred percent completely unoriginal. In this adventure your home world of Gothos has (without warning) come under attack. And guess what? The fate of civilisation depends upon you, the one and only Melvin.

Yes, it’s not the best story, but as you play the game you will discover just how twisted and intriguing the plot becomes. Either way, the game looks absolutely stunning, thanks to Sunflowers. Environments are lush, varied, highly detailed, and there’s lots of them. Typical to the RPG genre, character development is very important, and this is demonstrated well in Technomage. As well as uncovering plenty of history about the lead characters, there are also 50 other non-playable characters to interact with. Eight end-of-level bosses and hundreds of puzzles help ensure that Technomage provides a great challenge to anyone. All the typical role-playing elements are there, including an extensive library of weapons, items and magic.

With over fifty hours of gameplay, Technomage is one of the PC’s more epic releases. Well worth it.
