Darkstone on the PlayStation is a port of the highly successful PC game of the same name. The game, from developers Delphine, is a coming together of Diablo, part one of Rage of Mages, and part one of Ultima.
The story follows a quest to stop the evil dragon overlord Drakk, a malicious death-hungry lizard-like monster. Drakk has taken it upon himself to summon a subterranean Monolith, with which he plans to drain lifeforce from the entire world. This will then leave the world free to be robbed and pillaged at Drakks leisure.
Not surprisingly, the only person capable of saving the world is you, the player. You and an accomplice must travel the lands surrounding your hometown in a quest to find seven magic crystals that have been hidden by the world's elders. Once you have recovered the crystals you can commence unlocking the power that is held within The Orb, an ancient artefact that holds the secret to Drakk's defeat.
One of Delphines primary objectives when writing Darkstone was to make the game as expansive as possible. This was to include allowing the player to redefine the gameplay with each adventure. The concept is simple. To complete Darkstone, you must undertake seven different quests which will take a variety of forms, depending on where, when and with which character the game is started with.
The games battle sequences are real-time, all-action affairs in the style of the classic Gauntlet. It is up to you as to whether or not you fight or run. You may also choose from a variety of camera options. The camera angle is controlled in real time with the right analogue stick on the pad. You can zoom in or out and set the camera to smart mode if you prefer. Also available is a Gauntlet-tastic top-down view.
With all the spells, weapons, monsters and magic you would expect from a top flight RPG, Darkstone is a bargain.
