Summary

Surfing titles are somewhat under-represented in the modern world of video games. If you fancy hitting the waves in a virtual sense then why not check out Surfing Championship on the Sega Dreamcast? This is a comprehensive surfing simulation that captures the adrenaline rush of the real sport.

Initially it is hard to get to grips with the gameplay mechanics but if you persevere you will find a fun game hidden underneath. The idea of the game is to prove yourself as the king of the waves by amassing points in the championship mode. Learning when to catch the wave is imperative to a successful run. Once you have the hang of riding waves there is a multitude of different tricks that can pulled off for big points.

The graphics in Surfing Championship are not worth writing home about but the accurate replication of the wave physics are. The animation of your character is well represented and the game runs smoothly. The difficulty level is high and mastering the game will take you some time. Once you are able to perform the tricks that you want without losing the wave, this game comes into its own.

There are only four buttons to learn: slash, hard slash, catch air and grab your rail. Slashing is used for quick turns and can be used in combination with the other tricks. Pulling off a mid-air 360 and landing perfectly for the next trick is a rewarding experience.

So wax your board and hit the waves for some ocean fun in Surfing Championship.
