Summary

BMX, a sport better known in the United States than over here, has become more popular with the younger audience in the UK in recent years. And when Mat Hoffman’s BMX was released across a variety of gaming platforms, it proved so successful that Activision released a conversion on GameBoy Color.

Due the limitations of the 8-bit hardware, the GameBoy version has been produced in 2D, effectively making the game a completely different playing experience. The 2D animations and backgrounds have been designed to give the best fake 3D appearance possible, and it is done quite well.

In terms of game size, there are four game modes available that include championship challenges, free ride and trick mode. After choosing from one of eight world-class players, including Mat Hoffman himself, you can perform some of your best tricks in a variety of themed locations. Some challenges take place on the streets and in parks, while others involve creepy warehouses, ridden with boxes and rails. Tricks and stunts can be performed by executing numerous button and directional combinations, allowing the player to pull off grinds and awesome back-flips. Over 200 tricks can be performed in total. On the progression side of things, the player can move up through the professional rankings, unlocking new courses and bikes in the process.

Mat Hoffman BMX for GameBoy is a surprisingly faithful spin off from the console originals.
