Army Men Operation Meltdown - PlayStation

Alright then you ‘orrible lot, fall in and surrender to yet another instalment in the Army Men series. Released with little fanfare (in the UK at least), Army Men Operation Meltdown continues the fine tradition of enjoyable gameplay, clever tactics, and the heady whiff of nostalgia for those of us old enough to remember playing with the real, albeit plastic thing. So why no fanfare on release? Have 3DO over-egged the pudding by bringing out another Army Men title? Not a bit of it, Operation Meltdown is easily as much fun as Sarge’s Heroes or Air Attack, and a whole bundle of explosive fun to boot.

The stakes are as high as ever. Never before has the Green Army faced such a threat. The Tan are massed on all borders, ready to strike at the heart of the Green homeland. Every last plastic soldier has been called upon to serve his country in this bleak hour, and you are one of them. The challenges are just as tough as you would expect, but you are not alone. Fellow soldiers will help you in some of your battles, but it really comes down to your own ability, determination and powers of endurance.

It is up to you to purge the lands of the enemy’s presence and restore balance to the Green and Tan territories. The Pacific, Eastern and Western fronts are your battlefields, Succeed, and the Green nation prevails, it’s existence ensured by you, a hero who has risen to overcome the most difficult of situations. Fail, and well, it’s meltdown time!

Army Men Operation Meltdown is a most welcome addition to 3DO’s collection. All of the games in this series have been enormous fun to play, and this latest is no exception. Can’t wait for the next variation, myself…
