Summary

In this particular era of video gaming, Capcom are essentially known for their expertise in the beat-em-up and survival horror genres. However, there is an old arcade platformer that also helped to make Capcom become one of the top developers within the industry. Strider was a classic, and with a brand new version of the game due for a release on PlayStation, retro gamers are set to be in for a treat. Having included the arcade original in the bundle, this Strider title looks set to be in the competition for the number one spot for Christmas 2001.

Retro fans will get a blast from the past with the first faithful instalment of the first game on recent platforms. However, those of you new to the series should know that these games are among some of the best platforming games of all time. In attempts to keep up with today’s technology, Capcom’s decision to give Strider 2 a third dimension is a positive one, although it does take on a linear role in the form of Pandemonium and Crash Bandicoot. Despite the extra dimension, gameplay is distinctly similar to its predecessor, and given the success of Strider 1, this can’t be a bad thing. Graphical enhancements aside, a few new power ups have been added to the sequel, along with a plethora of new bosses, bad guys and some fantastic special effects.

Retro gamers looking for something genuinely new will be disappointed, but there shouldn’t be many of you. Newcomers to the series will enjoy this one, as well as those looking to relive their past.
