Obviously I'm not looking for an easy ride here, but the controls seem to require much more precision than either the original game or even
Legend demanded.
Legend used the same game engine remember? When you combine the demanding controls with level design that doesn't always make it apparent where you should be going, you can find yourself repeating the same combinations of jumps and climbing multiple times. Or just standing there for ages looking lost as you try to figure out what you should do next.
Oh, and remember those animals? Well, they are of the very rare teleporting variety. You know the type, they weren't down this corridor the last time you went past and can't have got there without being dropped in by a particularly malicious level designer, yet there they are for no reason other than you have picked up an item in the previous room. You are supposed to be the first person to enter these places in thousands of years, so how are there still animals alive, living in cages that they can't get out of until you need to open them?
These problems with the game take the shine off what should have been an excellent experience. The original
Tomb Raider was a landmark game with an engaging storyline and wonderful level design.
Legend introduced a quite brilliant game engine that opened up exploration like never before.
Anniversary manages to be just less than the sum of its parts. Sections of the original game have been excised or merged, the boss battles have been made less engaging and the core gameplay of navigation has been made much more frustrating.
Now don't get me wrong,
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary isn't a bad game by any means, it's just that it falls short of the great game that it should have been and that's frustrating. I get the impression that a bit more play-testing and a few more tweaks to the controls would have taken those rough edges off and made the game play more smoothly. Certainly, it'll be very interesting to see how
Assassin's Creed influences future
Tomb Raider games with its more free flowing navigation.

Conclusion
This should have been a game that everybody would want to play, but it feels slightly rushed and causes great frustration in places. A month more of play-testing could have worked wonders and delivered a truly exceptional game. That said, it still has the engaging storyline, 'brain- training' puzzles, interesting locals, Lara's obvious charms, and the undeniable feel of a thoroughbred being set through its paces while never quite getting to the full gallop.
