We recently brought you news that several Final Fantasy games were currently in development for Nintendo’s forthcoming Game Boy Advance. This is an exciting prospect but unfortunately they may never get released on the handheld. Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi recently stated in an interview with Bloomberg Japan that he will not allow Square games on his consoles.
It would seem that there still might be some hostile feelings between the two companies, especially from Nintendo’s side. The problem most likely stems from Square’s decision to release Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9 on the PlayStation.
Nintendo shot itself in the foot with the decision to go with expensive, low-storage capacity cartridges. When you consider that Final Fantasy games come on multiple CDs, fitting them on cartridges would be impossible. So obviously it’s Square’s fault that Nintendo went with the wrong media.
"There is no contract with Square, and that matter is not open to further discussion...[They] can say whatever they want, but we have no intention of signing a contract, and there's little chance of one being signed in the future."
Before Final Fantasy 7 all previous FF incarnations were exclusive to Nintendo and it must have made them sick to lose that deal. It seems like the two multi-national companies are acting like spoiled kids and this is not acceptable. It is not in our best interest, it makes us mad! Why would Nintendo not welcome Square back with open arms as FF games would make them a lot of money.
