2K Games has just announced that it's picked up the publishing rights to The Darkness on Xbox 360 and PS3 – a game based on Top Cow’s legendary and hugely popular comic book franchise, due for release this coming winter.

The game, which was previously with Majesco before they imploded, is under development by the award-winning developer Starbreeze Studios, creators of Chronicles of Riddick. The Darkness makes use of Starbreeze's own internally developed next-generation game engine and features, according to the announcement release, “a distinct blend of dark modern crime drama and supernatural horror with intense first person non-linear gameplay.”

The game is essentially a first person action/shooter game set in the gritty New York environments and dark, dank otherworld featured in the comic books. Players will take on the role of Mafia hitman Jackie Estacado who, on the night of his 21st birthday, becomes possessed by "The Darkness," an ancient demonic entity that gives him spectacular powers.

Christoph Hartmann, Managing Director of 2K Games, had the following to say about their kudos-points winning new signing: "Armed with an arsenal of guns, gamers will battle an array of demonic creatures and supernatural powers. The dark and dynamic comic book storyline will translate perfectly into first-person action that fans will love."

The best-selling comic book series "The Darkness" launched in 1996 and is currently published in 19 different languages around the world, plus there’s also a feature film based on the franchise in the works, currently in pre-production for projected release in 2007.
