The Destination PlayStation event in Miami is about to enter its third and final day and in spite of strict NDAs enforced upon attendees, news has leaked out that there is no news at least on the PlayStation 3.
It was thought that with Sony still sticking to its guns on a spring launch, some sort of reassurance to the gaming world would have been forthcoming. However,
Sony has briefed publishers, developers and retailers in Europe that the PlayStation 3 will not be available in Europe until March 2007, as we exclusively revealed earlier this month.
SCE has since gone on record to indicate that component shortages may severely hamper the global roll-out of the machine, with the Japanese debut likely pushed back. The highest quality picture is vital to the PS3. There is a possibility of delay [to the launch] if delivery of parts is delayed, commented an unnamed SCEI representative.
Many industry watchers had expected Sony to make a major announcement at Destination PlayStation and it looks like they will be severely disjointed. The fact that the PlayStation 3 simply cannot launch on target makes something of a mockery of SCE's constant assertions that all is well, leaving many wondering why the electronics giant doesn't simply set the record straight. If Sony believes that keeping consumers waiting will dent Xbox 360 sales, it's dead wrong, with the only thing limiting the purchase of Microsoft's new machine being how fast its production facilities can make them.
Sony has been rightly criticised in the past for its gamesmanship tactics and perceived inability to tell the truth. To invite a bunch of jaded journalists to Miami, hinting that they would be shown PlayStation 3 in some form, only to fill them with marketing spew on PSP and PlayStation 2 and refusing to release any actual news was always bound to backfire.
It looks like we'll know nothing until this May's E3. And even then, debate will no doubt rage over where what is eventually shown was CG or not...
Still - there's always tomorrow. Hit this piece again around 6PM Pacific time (the wee hours in Europe - Ed) for an update.
