PlayStation 3 Pad Final Design?

SCEI throws weight behind unpopular prototype.

PlayStation 3 Pad Final Design?
We’ve made enough jokes at the expense of Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation 3 pad since it was first shown to a stunned public at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in LA back in May, as has everyone else.

As you will be aware from the above linked news, it was heavily rumoured that the pad would undergo a significant overhaul, with the banana shape being dropped in favour of a new design not reminiscent of Microsoft’s now-defunct Sidewinder range.

However, in the latest issue of Famitsu, an un-named Sony representative has thrown the company’s weight behind the basic design as shown, stating that any modifications will be mere tweaks to basic ergonomics as opposed to a complete redress of the situation.

It was thought that Sony was playing a double-bluff, withholding the final controller - presumably complete with Revolution-style surprise - for a full debut at this January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Alas, this appears not to be the case.

We detect a twist in this tale is still to come – stay tuned for regular updates.

you never know, it might actually be quite comfortable to hold, and easy to use.
they cant have settled on this design without at least a few people trying it out.

Perhaps, but it looks like the least confortable joypad I've ever seen; possible less confortable than the PSP or - gasp - the original Xbox controller!

the original controller was very comfortabel to hold (unless you have stubby suausage like midget fingers). the rounded diamond shaped buttons where retarded... and the balck and white buttons where always stupid... but as far as comfort goes it was very good... in fact the reason for the face buttons being skewed was to make them more easily reached by the thumb... they actually sacrificed the a+y combo in order to make it more ergonomic.

it was never a matter of comfort it was a matter of looks. peopel maked fun of how big the whoel thing was... and compared to the tiny nubs on a dual shock it was huge.... at a quick measure my pink is almost 3" long, easit more than the circumference of the tip of a dual shocks handle. (mind you i have some what large hands)

come on tiger, your taller than me, what are your thoughts?

Sony are true artistic geniuses, and I respect them a lot more than I used to! I agree with their attitude - "if you don't like Sony's products, tough s**t!" Stop whinging and buy an XBox, then.

Looking like a dildo isn't necessarily a bad thing, is it? Use your imagination here - potentially a more fun method of control than the Revolution's Controller.

Microsoft always make huge controllers - who are they aiming them at? It's also very uneconomical, but that part doesn't surprise me.

it might be a more fun method of control but it is an old one. Lets embrace something new.

THE CONTROL LOOKS COMFORTABLE JUST LIKE HOLDING A STEERING WHEEL BUT THE ONLY PROBLEM TOO ME IS HOW PUSHING THE BUTTONS GOING TO BE SINCE THERE PLACED IN A WEIRD POSITION

I've heard all this constant bitching about how bad the PS3 controller is going to be, yet how many people have picked the damn thing up and used it? Don't forget the fact that these are the same people that designed the DualShock controller. As the DualShock wasn't the prettiest looking controller of all time, it sure hell was the most comfortable. If anyone wants to complain about a nextgen company's controller, why not go after Nintendo? The thing looks like a f**kin TV remote. And I won't even start on Microsoft's efforts at making game controllers.

In my personal expercience (i'm a guy with slim long fingers) the GC-controller is the most comfortable and does not give me any cramps compared to any other controller out there. Offcourse i'm a guy with long fingers...someone with shorter ones could complain about the GC-controller and like the DualShock a lot more.

Funny you first accuse everyone of taking a s**t on the PS3-controller using the "have you ever hold one" argument and then you yourself take a s**t on the Rev-controller while that same "have you ever hold one" argument applies on yourself.
Can you say hypocrit? good, now write a nametag with that word on it and stick it on your forehead.

I originally hated that design, I thought it was ugly, big, overly rounded and very cheap looking. It was only after I saw THIS PICTURE which made me realise the true size of the controller and how maticulously it has been designed. Also THIS ARTICLE gave me a confidence boost.

In complete contradiction to the guy above me I found I couldn't stand the GC controller, the handles almost felt as though they cut into my palms and the key arrangements were awkward. To be honest, I loved the Xbox S controller the most as the Dual Shock, though perfectly designed, is a little too small for me. That's another reason why my hopes were restored by the PS3 controller, the handles are longer and seem more natural to hold.

Suppose it just goes to show that pictures can deceive sometimes, in that pic the hand to controller size looks okay and nothing to worry about.

Sony could have set folks minds at ease by actually holding the controller at E3 as well as the machine itself to give folks a better idea of it (correct me if they did).

Criticism of the PS3 pad isn't so because we don't like Sony, it exists because we don't have much idea about it and Sony haven't been very good on that front either. Whereas some journos got to try out the Rev controller, some didn't for PS3 (I think) if at all.

MS's 360 controller and the previous Controller S are cool to use and play but they are really just building on the loose and defunct DC design, and it has worked out well. MS could have made more of an original effort but 360 will do for now.

Put those fanboy fangs away people, a bad control design sometimes are made (the original Xbox controller felt like holding a bowl of fruit sometimes to me). we don't want another damn Atari Jaguar/telephone controller thing.
