Miyamoto on Revolution controller and games

Luigi, Pikmin, controller and more

Posted by Staff
Speaking in an interview with Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine in the United States of Americaland, famed Nintendo producer Shigeru Miyamoto spoke fairly candidly about all things Revolution. Okay, so he didn’t confirm any new games or what the controller actually is or, well any new details at all really. But it’s a good read all the same.

First onto the Revolution base hardware and its connectivity and DVD functionality. Miyamoto-san confirms that “The majority of households already own a DVD player or two. We don't want them to spend extra money just to have a console which happens to have DVD capability. And the DVD player isn't going to be an attachment; it’s going to go inside the machine so you won't even (be able to) tell the difference.” He goes on to state that “Revolution doesn't have an Ethernet port. However, through the USB port, it’s possible to have Ethernet with an adapter. Considering where the machine will be placed in the household, we think it would be difficult for people to route the typical Ethernet line to it. Also, We're considering connecting the DS with the Revolution via Wi-Fi.”

Of course anyone having held Revolution hardware would already know this. Read our detailed hands-on access to Nintendo’s next home console here.

Moving onto games we should expect, Miyamoto-san states that “Nothings set in stone yet, but the interface we're creating for the Revolution is well suited for Pikmin - I think it would be a good match. Not much I can say other than that. The director often says, ‘Make another one! Make another one!’ and I want to use Luigi again.” And as for Smash Bros – “We’re thinking about a DS version.”

Speaking of Technology, Miyamoto-san confirmes that he’s looking to work more with Stage Debut, Nintendo’s face-mapping system and, on the Revolution controller, says, “Well, of course, the idea is that the Revolution will sell and sell and sell so it becomes the standard in the industry. However, at least for the launch period...we designed the controller so it can play any of the different conventional styles. After all, we are talking about it playing games from our past machines. So don't worry.”

It still doesn't sound like they really know what's going on. And Mr Miyamoto is far off the mark if he expects Revolution to be the "standard in the industry". Walk before you can run, Nintendo.

And as http://spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=8941 indicates, developers are still being kept in the dark. Or Nintendo still doesn't know the "Revolution" in it's controller. They can't develop games until they know what to develop them for.

These confused signs from Nintendo, and the fact that Resident Evil 5 hasn't been announced on the Revolution, mean that I will almost certainly break with tradition and not buy a Nintendo console the next generation, going for the PS3 instead.

It would appear that Nintendo do know what the "Revolution" is and they have shown it to the most important third parties. I would assume this means Capcom, with them being so chummy.

I'm being optimistic and assuming that Resi 5 hasn't been announced for Revolution because Revolution hasn't been fully announed properly. I doubt it though.

I'd hate to state the obvious, but Nintendo has every right to say that their controller alterations will standardize the console world. Nearly every single controller alteration, from analog sticks, d-pads, rumble, etc, has been created by Nintendo, and copied by the other companies. Now, while Nintendo has created some stinkers, ->See Virtual Boy, when it comes to controller inovation, Nintendo has been at the top of their game.

Exactly, Nintendo leads, the rest of the industry follows (except for Virtual Boy, but I didn't think Nintendo was aiming for the industry to "standardize" a virtual reality system, but then again, I could be wrong.) The dual screens probably won't become standard in the industry either, but touchscreen might.

I think it's very noble (and stupid) of Nintendo to hold off with the Rev info and actually sticking to their guns for once, just like the used to back in the good old days of 80/90's gaming. Maybe the pad will change things. Either way Nintendo should be prepared to take Sony to court over stealing controller ideas.

Sure, developers will choose their camps quickly (I'm as worried as the next guy on this fact where Rev is concerned), but Nintendo are talking to those who can keep their mouths shut on the Rev from mags and websites and I'm sure it can't be easy being so tightlipped, especially after E3. Sega and Capcom look to be in that secret circle.

Only a few months to go now. The likely hood of Nintendo having what happened to our Xbox 360 bloke and his dumb son (and the leaks before hand 360 was announced) happen to them is pretty low indeed. If I have to wait til Xmas or pre-360 launch for more news, then so be it.

I think it would be silly of Capcom to move the RE series to other platforms after having so many of them on GC. If so then they'd have to convert all the previous GC games on both PS3 and 360. By this time many might start to wise up to buying the lot again. How many times? That's up to Capcom I guess.

Perhaps if they'd put the Outbreak series on XBox and PS2 they might have made more money.

As for the Rev controller, we'll just wait have and see. Tired of speculating now, but if it'a GC friendly it should be okay.

Acording to Capcom reps, RE5 is the 'main focus' in Japan. That and Street Fighter 4. ;-)

What's the fuss about RE5 anyway? It's RE4 with higher polygon numbers you don't see anyway(except if you're a graphic whore, they always say they see a difference). Shinji Mikami left the RE team and took a few important keyguys with him, RE without Mikami is not a RE.

That said, Capcom probably know what the Revolution is but have their hands tied down with NDA-cuffs here to timboektoe.
Take that Sega guy with his review recently, he knows clearly what the Revolution is but he doesn't give a hint...why? he's going to get his company bankrupt if he does that, thight-ass NDA's do that.

And didn't Iwata say in the interview that Nintendo is considering of giving some of their online catalogue games the ability to go online? Oh hell yeah!

No, if RE4 is anything to go by, it's better.

Seriously, RE2 was good and so was 1, but 3 blew chunks and Code Veronica was quite inaccessible to gamers. RE4 brought a lot of people back to the franchise, and if that continues with 5 I'll be happy.

As for the poly count... oh, you will notice.
That, and the better lighting, textures and facial expressions. Reality is seeping in, and as such things should feel more real. You couldn't do that with the RE2/3 system, but you can with 4...

I still think the new Rev controller is going to be a let down and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it didn't support the GC controllers. As SPOnG states in their review of the Rev, it has 4 wired GC controller ports. So I'd say that they're expecting anyone who wants to play GC games to already have the controllers, plus this means they don't have to incorporate two analogue sticks. Which justs leaves them to incorporate the C Buttons from the N64, which could well be on the reverse of the controller mentioned. Of cource we still don't know what cutton config they're going to use for the Rev it self.

I also don't expect Nintendo to announce the controller, until both the PS3 and 360 are in mass production, for fear of their competitors stealing the ideas. Especially with the PS3 controller still being shown as a prototype. Not that I'm saying Sony of Microsoft would but it must be of concern to them!

Going by the previous games, I thought RE1 was very poor and Zero and CV were very good. CV's controllers and 3D view made it more accessible - many people remember Resi for it's crap controls.

However, I would agree that RE4 is a turning point for the series, and I hope that Capcom continue the franchise on Nintendo systems.
