One of the big surprises to emerge from E3 2004 was Infinium’s Phantom console, available for test in playable form on a really rather impressive booth, complete with plasma TV’s, girls and free T-shirts, seeing the firm covering all the tradeshow bases.

This year there was nothing. Not a murmur, prompting many to assume the Phantom was, as expected, living up to its name and disappearing into the darker space surrounding capital investment in the technology sector.

SPOnG contacted Infinium CEO Tim Roberts for clarification of the issue last night, eager to find out why the no show had occurred. He came back to us to say, “This is our company’s statement to the public regarding E3: Infinium Labs is dedicated to launching the Phantom Game Service and has committed its full attention and resources on product rather than trade shows. We continue to achieve significant and well publicized milestones and are well on our way to delivering to consumers a compelling end-to-end, video games-on-demand solution.”

So according to the firm, all is well. However, one would imagine that at least a meeting room at this year’s event to discuss “significant and well publicized milestones” wouldn’t have been too much to ask.

We’ll keep you updated with any and all Phantom news as the saga plays itself out. Stay tuned.

3 years ago, this might of had a shot and might have been able to get a foot in there... but now?

If i remember correctly, the specs of the phantom were a tad better than xbox... but nowhere close to anything Nintendo/MS/Sony are producing next gen. So will they have updated specs as well? Also, they were stressing the 'online' event. With Microsoft, Nintendo AND Sony all having great online services next gen, i wonder why they even bother.

One thing about trade shows: at least they make sure people know you exist.

And, according to this recent press release, the Phantom game service will be featured on the weekend edition of Dow Jones Market-Watch TV show sometime during the month of June. Within the accompaning link, Mr Bachus, seems to acknowledge a presence at this year's recent E3 tradeshow (2005), as they were sampling attendees, in regard to piracy, suggesting that they were there. http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050531/phtu011.html?.v=13 . <Just copy, paste and click on this address ;-,.

These really are stupidly small mentions of a company that is going to revolutionise the games distribution market.

First some bloke on a board mentions that if some other bloke turned up at E3, only the Infinium people would talk to him. This was posted in afternoon of the 18th May, opening day of E3, so he couldn't have much idea if Infinium were there or not. It's such a negative comment against Infinium and the Phantom I wouldn't have taken it as meaning they were at E3.

Secondly, Mr. Bachus announced that he was interviewed by Market Watch about games on demand. Unless the video stream (which wouldn't work for me) explicitly mentions E3, there's nothing in the page you linked to that backs up any claim that Infinium was at E3.

If we take the fact that Infinium was at E3 polling people on piracy at face value, there was a vastly reduced presence over their last outing. In fact, SPOnG probably had a larger presence at E3.

In any case, where was the Phantom console?

having photographed every stinkign square inch of the place... no, no up skirts... i can assure you there was NO booth... i could quite possibly construct a walk through of the whoel place (infact if i where a more productive person i would probably do exactly that) i have so many photos.

suprisingly enouogh i managed to risk the horrid temptation to wait in lien to be photographed with "booth babes"... not somethign i was terribly interested in but it was my firt time. Heres hopping i will return next year.

also, on a barly related not, since we are speaking about the more comical systems... gizmondo had a suprisingly awsome set up... and soem actually kind of interesting demos... not to mention a rather large crowd... i coudl actually concieve of buyiing one fo the things... not somethign i expected... its kind of impressive that they have more titles slated for release by the end of the year than the psp does... even if 20 of them are snood. (although the completel lack of any sort of analog input was a downer)

Sod the console. If that company wants to make money, they should start selling that keyboard/mouse combo they have.
