Nintendo America has backed away from any possible enhanced media player functionality for the upcoming DS portable, claiming at a recent US press conference that any offering must be top-notch in order to compete.
No doubt a swipe at Sony’s faltering plans for a significant level of media convergence for the PSP, Nintendo US front man Reggie Fils-Aime said, “If you deliver multifunctionality, it should be the gold standard,” halting talk that pointed towards Nintendo entering the race for the multimedia market.
However, Nintendo clearly does have its eye on delivering at least some, highly-targeted non-game content to gamers, with the firm launching Pokemon and SpongeBob SquarePants single episode cartridges in the US for the Game Boy Advance. This preliminary offering will no doubt prove to be Nintendo’s testing ground as it looks to bigger DS storage containing movie footage in the coming months.
