Nintendogs Explained - Barking Mad or Man's Best Friend?

It's a virtual pet simulator apparently.

King of Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto, has finally offered up an explanation for what that peculiar DS Nintendogs thing is all about. Nintendogs has been the centre of much speculation, simply because it was a new first party title and no-one had the faintest idea what it was.

Logically enough, Nintendogs AKA Puppy Times, is a virtual pet simulator. It is, of course, a fairly considerable step up from Tamagotchi, but the principle is similar. The player will have three dogs which can be trained to do various tricks, and this educational process will see DS owners exploring many of the DS's unique functions. Employing the microphone and the touch-sensitive screen, you'll be able to holler commands and words of encouragement at your mutt before patting it on the head, perhaps knocking off a few fleas with the stylus in the process.

Nintendogs will also support the DS wi-fi feature, so game-playing lovers of all things canine with an interest in Crufts-style dog competitions ought to revel in this news.

This looks cool and a very different move from Nintendo, perhaps the Pokemon aspect pushed a little further. Interestingly this might be the type of game that might also appeal to female fans who went crazy for Tamogotchi. If it works on them then it's all the better.

The wi-fi feature would be nice for races and trading items etc if possible. Great idea for a hand held.

We all love cute little pups (most people anyway), but if it's later expanded to different animals that would also be a good thing.
