Capcom have given a release date to their all-new (yet entirely re-hashed) beat ‘em up, Capcom Fighting Jam (to be called Capcom Fighting Evolution outside of Japan). For Playstation 2, that will be 2nd December. For the Xbox version, a specific date has yet to be decided upon. Presumably this is because Capcom’s other classic style fighter, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, is already heading onto Xbox this winter – and that could create potentially damaging intra-house competition.
The US website states a vague ‘winter’ release for both versions; but again, the possible clash with Street Fighter Anniversary Collection might prompt Capcom to push the Xbox version back a bit. The PS2 version, on the other hand, will be fundamental to Capcom’s SNK-parrying strategy. SNK, long-standing yet beloved sparring partner to Capcom, is releasing an enormous number of 2D fighters (mostly bearing The King Of Fighters name) on PS2 in the coming months – which Capcom Fighting Jam will wish to challenge as effectively as possible.
But it’s difficult to saturate this market. Hardcore fans of 2D fighting games will probably buy all of them anyway, along with some special edition arcade sticks and branded overlays. Half-interested parties, however, may have some difficult purchasing decisions to make.
As soon as Capcom confirms a PAL release date, SPOnG will be there.
