In a recent report from Bloomberg it was suggested that Nintendo is planning to unleash the final DS details at a press conference on 7th October. Although this hasn’t been confirmed by Nintendo, some sort of official announcement was always on the cards for around this period. It is slightly surprising that TGS wasn’t chosen as the time and place to make exciting DS revelations, especially as Sony are promising to show 100 PSP titles over the duration over the show: but Nintendo’s promotional activity has already started up elsewhere, with TV ads airing in Japan this weekend; so its marketing plans are clearly well underway. Holding the conference after Sony’s would also enable Nintendo to react to any specific details, thus stealing as much thunder away from the PSP as possible.
Even if the PSP parade at TGS does reel in the public in huge volumes, Nintendo is planning its own public tour of Japan (misleadingly called World Touch DS) to help stimulate the hype monster. Throughout November, the DS will be at free showings up and down Japan: and by this point, potential customers will literally be able to smell the DS funk hanging heavy in the air, because release dates and prices will have been officially revealed.
If the 7th October press conference is actually happening, both Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto are expected to be in attendance: offering invaluable insights and definitive answers to any outlying questions alluding to the new Nintendo handheld. As soon as any DS conferencing commences, find the conclusive facts here.
