This week has seen various websites flaunting images supposedly picturing the Xbox 2 (or Xenon) in concept form. Engadget.com apparently received these pictures claiming to be from someone involved in the focus-group testing for Microsoft’s next console. We are, however, somewhat sceptical. Quite apart from the (lack of) quality of the design, it’s difficult to imagine how a subject involved in market research could have escaped with a picture of this highly confidential project. And if it was true, it’s even more difficult to imagine why said ‘spy’ didn’t just sell the spoils to Sony!
To put it into perspective, here’s a few attempts at Xbox 2 concept art as provided by the good users of Xbox-Scene.com – which, interestingly enough, had started up a devoted forum thread filled with ‘fake concept pics’ just before engadget got its mitts on the images currently circulating around the internet.
It seems that either individual members of the public (particularly Xeta from Xbox-scene.com) have greater design skills than Microsoft's design departments, or perhaps that those original representations of the Xbox 2 are just entirely false. Only time will tell, but we’d be surprised if the Xbox 2 resembles anything pictured on this page.
