In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, Todd Hollenshead - creator of Doom - claimed that his team would be starting work on a brand new game as soon as Doom 3 has been pushed out of the door and onto the shelves later this summer. Notably, this game will not be related to any of the Doom, Quake or Wolfenstein games that have done so much for iD’s fortunes to date. At any length, this new intellectual property should provide another capacious basket in which to place their big and numerous eggs.
All of iD’s previous ventures have been technically accomplished and critically well-received FPS titles, with a tendency towards fairly horrific premises. Martian zombies, robotic zombies, Nazi zombies...there’s certainly a pattern there. Hollenshead declined to reveal any further details on the new game, but gamblers would be unwise to back anything not along the lines of a monster-packed FPS. It’s very early stages though, so there are sure to be some surprises in store.
