The web is awash with reports this morning with stories foretelling almost every aspect of the Xbox 2's imminent emergence into tangibility (phew!) with its unveiling and release dates, as well as a full architecture list, being widely touted.

The release date, depending on which story you happen to read, is this Christmas, or next Christmas or next summer. Again, depending on the story, the machine will be shown at E3, later this summer, this Christmas, or at some other point in time.

Interestingly, a Chinese website forum (perhaps the least likely place to find accurate Xbox 2 information) contains what purports to be the full architectural outline for the machine.

CPU:

Three identical cores, 64bit PowerPC at 3.5G+
Total 6 HW threads
32K 2way I-cache, 32K 4way D-cache
1MB 8way shared L2 cache
84+ GFlops in one chip

GPU:
Shader 3.0+, 4096 instr, dynamic branching, unified VS & PS
memory write from shader code

48 ALUs(shader process) each at 500M Hz
466 GFLOPS

Free 4xFSAA

Frame buffer format:
INT, 2:10:10:10, 8:8:8:8, 16:16:16:16
FP, 11f:11f:10f, 16f:16f:16f:16f, 32f:32f:32f:32f

Pixel rate 4.0 BPix/S
Triangle generate 500 MTri/s
PixelShader 48 Ginstr/s
VertShader 48 Ginstr/s
Tex rate 8 Gpix/s
Tex Bandwidth 22GB/s

And so it continues. Go have a look at http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/mmedia/display/20040426094105.html for the full story. Ahem.

Next time: A load of cobblers about GameCube 2. Perhaps even PlayStation 3. Stay tuned.

If you are admitting that this is a load of old cobblers then..

..why are you reporting it as news?

It's impossible to have three CPUs. Three processors, yes... but not three CPUs as stated in the diagram.

Terrible fake. Do some research or you'll soon be as bad as gamesindustry.biz

Why are you taking this so seriously? You're a goth, aren't you?

And Soong, this is for you too - Spong has a habit now and then of alerting punters to the whiff of bullshit on other games/tech sites - this piece is a prime example.

The news is that this hoax is doing the rounds. It's popping up all over the place, and not every report is identifying it as bullshit.

I don't see what the big deal is...

Gamesindustry.biz is researched... and besides, as far as I know, it is Spong by far that has the worst rep for telling whoopers on the net

Youd hope Gamesindustry.biz is reserched becasue they make out like they are some sort of authority. I still find a lot of rubbish on there news plus 'press releases-as-news' that Ive seen on reuters, google or yahoo hours or days before. I dont understand why spong has a bad rep. Spongs whoppers usually happen whne they have an *opinion* that one thing will happen and it doesnt, but most of the time they get trashed for a story but whne it turn out to be truth non of those people ever say 'Oh look Spong was right'.

Rubbish or not, Ill stil come here daily to get my news. I like there cynisism and humour
