Miyamoto’s Sentient Plant Dream Phase 2 - Latest Screens

Pikmin 2 screenshot frenzy.

Strange things happen when you get old, of this there is no doubt. But ignoring the inherent odour issues associated with ageing, it’s what interests us on our way out that is perhaps the most perturbing.

Take Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, for instance. After two decades at the top of the tree, he's made reference in many interviews that his working practices and lifestyle were slowing down somewhat. He mentioned that gardening and playing the guitar were his favourite things to do.

Imagine the scene: Miyamoto, alone in his garden, lounging on a deckchair. He wants to play his guitar and ponder things, but it’s all the way across the ornamental pond inside the house. He thinks, "If only all these plants I have tended for so long could be controlled to do my bidding..." And so Pikmin was born.

Back to the point: here are the latest screenshots, courtesy of The Magic Box, taken from the GameCube-exclusive Pikmin 2, a hugely expanded take on the original game, complete with multiplayer options and more, due to hit Europe this summer.

Ah Pikmin - a classic.

Inspired by Miyamoto's back yard, I'm told.

The shots look great, and I'm certain the game will be too. Especially with a two-player option.

You have to wonder what he grows in it. If I started tripping out, believing that I could control plants to do my bidding, I'd be arrested.

As far as Pikmin being a classic goes, this is kinda right, though it’s a shame that it was rushed out shot towards the end. I have no issue with short game but when the length is forced by development timescales, as opposed to the structure of the software, it is a shame, especially with high profile, innovative works.

To be fair, you have to believe that a game will sell pretty well when its one of the only 1st party games to launch with new hardware.

Either way, Pikmin was a huge refreshment in gaming, and the first place I point to when people ask when Nintendo will make something new.

Then I point to Animal Crossing...which I hope we hear about at E3...

Dude, I went to your site, the Pandaman thing. The Sponsor a Pimpmaster thing was fully awesome. But St Boner's day is, like, totally bogus. I mean, what would it be? A day for talking all pained and earnestly, and for singing the most bombastic and self important songs, some of them without any discernible tune.

Plus, I think St Patrick was Welch, not English.
