Sony has today announced it has reached the staggering 5 million mark for UK PS2 sales. The company added that demand for the machine has been accelerating, with sales growing faster than the original PlayStation by a ratio of 2.6 to 1.
"We are delighted to reach and pass the 5 million mark," said Ray Maguire, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK, "There are still big weeks to come as Christmas looms. The rate of sale is incredible even (sic) and shows that PlayStation 2 remains the console of choice. Our established market leadership position has no doubt been bolstered by having the largest amount of games and a growing online presence (the current top three games in the All Formats Chart all feature exclusive compatibility with PlayStation 2 network gaming service). We would like to extend a warm thank you to all our trade partners who have helped us to achieve this new milestone."
Surely things can only get better for the Japanese electronics giant as we approach the yuletide consumer frenzy. With the battle for the console top spot almost certainly over, we can only wait and see what the next round brings us, circa 2005.
