New focus for Sega?

Speaking to Bloomberg Japan, Sammy president and CEO Hajime Satomi has indicated that he wants Sega to go back to concentrating more on the arcade side of things and therefore pour less money into what he termed 'loss-making' home console releases. He also mentioned that he wants Sega to start using Sammy's own Atomiswave arcade system, its JAMMA-compatible, cartridge-based set-up that's based on Sega's Dreamcast/Naomi architecture. According to Satomi, "It's low cost enough that even a single play at 10 yen a game can turn a profit. We can sell it in third-world countries as well."

Is this a taste of things to come? Sammy clearly looks to be shifting the focus towards Sega's more profitable areas, which in this case is its arcade business. Despite the general lacklustre scene of late, Sega's arcade sector still managed to post a 5.6 billion yen profit in its last reported six-month figures, a sum that thankfully managed to offset the 2.5 billion yen loss in the console business.
