PlayStation 3 and PSP OS designer departs
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has today stated that Shinichi Okamoto, one of Ken Kutaragi’s closest technical advisers, has left the firm.

SCE disclosed some time ago that Okamoto-san, believed by many to be the driving technical force behind Kutaragi’s political lobbying for games machine development, has been working on platform-specific operating systems for both PSP and PlayStation 3. What impact his departure will have on the launch of both machines will make itself clear over time.

Okamoto-san's departure will see Masayuki Chatani filling his no-doubt sizeable boots. Chatani-san has been responsible for overseeing both hardware and software development in the US as part of a technical ambassadorship carried out by SCEJ.

For reference, Okamoto-san was the pioneer of Sony’s “quick-to-market-bolt-on” strategy. Essentially, he designed the PlayStation 2 to be able to get to market in the shortest possible time, with the ability to bolt on components, such as the hard drive and network adapters, as and when they launch.

Stay tuned for everything PSP and PlayStation 3 as it breaks.
