Iwata confirms Donkey Kong and bongo controller
Speaking in Japanese gaming weekly Famitsu, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confirmed the existence of Donkey Konga, the DK-themed drumming game for GameCube.

Amazingly, Iwata, considered a sober leader with acclaimed business acumen, also announced that a drum controller called the Nintendo GameCube Conga Drum will be released in order to play the game.

Famitsu went on to confirm that, as suspected, the team behind Namco’s Taikou no Tetsujin drumming game will be charged with its development.

Although we welcome innovation in a stagnating gaming market, perhaps this move is a little misguided. Music games are massively popular throughout the world, though in times when the GameCube is struggling to shed its kiddy image, perhaps the timing of this announcement could have been better.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that fans of the Donkey Kong series would have, without question, preferred a true sequel - a platform game.

We’ll bring you screens and controller snaps from Donkey Konga, due to hit Japan in spring next year, as soon as possible.

And by the way, all the hype about Iwata confirming something that will combine software and hardware that everyone can play and be out next spring – well, this is it.

It’s not a new console. It’s a drum…
