Mastertronic is a company most fondly remembered by anyone who owned a ‘home computer’ back in the day. The ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC 464 were the pinnacle of gaming at a time when disc-based games were the stuff of a madman’s dreams. With cassette-based titles retailing for less than two quid a pop, you’d choose any old game from your local retailer, influenced mainly by how cool the cover art was.

Finally, Mastertronic’s time has come again. Andy Payne and Paul Patterson have decided to put Mastertronic back on the map, sharing the same budget ethos as their forefathers. £1.99 games are unlikely, but we can surely expect some relative bargains. While the gaming industry has recently been criticised for making games too big, which has in turn slowed the rate of consumption, the resurrected Mastertronic brand seems poised to take us ‘back to basics’.

There’s sure to be more news once the company gets up and running later this year.
