Nintendo ups the GBA ante

SP to power full scale assault.

At a press conference in Tokyo yesterday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced that the firm has shifted its projected sales target for Game Boy Advance units around the world.

Raising the bar from 15 million sales to 20 million sales, Iwata said, “With full confidence, we will launch Game Boy Advance SP as the ultimate version of the hand-held game player. With a wide-ranging software line-up, Game Boy Advance SP will be able to appeal to a broader range of users, regardless of age or sex, mirroring earlier claims by Nintendo that the SP will broaden the scope for handheld gaming”.

When asked about upcoming rival machines from the likes of Nokia, Iwata seemed nonplussed. “We see them not within our market space,” said Iwata. “We have an expansive portfolio which includes the biggest franchises, such as Pokemon.”

We’ll make up our own minds about the Nokia N-Gage, as tonight we’ll be treated to a sneak hands-on with the device. Hopefully, Sega’s Sonic for mobiles will be there too.

We’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.
