Sony Computer Entertainment: PlayStation 3 to be 'any box'
At a press conference held overnight in Japan Sony Computer Entertainment made its strongest pledge yet towards bringing out an update to the wildly successful PlayStation 2, a console that has become the fastest selling of all time.

"We're not thinking about hardware," said SCE spokesman Kenichi Fukunaga. "The ideal solution would be having an operating system installed in various home appliances that could run game programs. We've started with boxes - making boxes to do specific things, but if you have a chip this powerful you can add functions to any box. It's reverse thinking."

Exactly what this will mean remains to be seen but as far as we can tell, Sony plans on making a chipset so powerful, a gaming platform could be housed within any appliance the firm sees fit. It could be the sort of situation whereby, when you buy your new Sony TV or DV cam, you could have the option of that device harbouring PlayStation 3 technologies. Does this mean that a stand-alone games console is slipping out of the Japanese behemoth's view?

Stay tuned for full updates as they break.
