No Analog Face Buttons for PS4

No more hardness detection for you

The PS4 controller is going firmly forward as management speak would have it. Its ditching all analog/analogue elements such as the iconic face buttons sensing how hard you've pressed them.

Now, some people will find this move highly acceptable as progress (aka 'moving forward') from old fashioned analog to new fashioned digital means... well... let's see what Sony said:

Toshimasa Aoki, the manager at Sony Computer Entertainment’s product planning department told Venturebeat, "With the DualShock 3, we were able to get analog data, which games didn’t really use.

“For DualShock 4, we deleted that, and now it’s all digital. The mechanism inside is a little different, and the data that games get is different.”

Are you going to miss the analog? Let us know in the comments or over on Facebook.

I remember playing with these as a developer back in the PS2 era and finding the output from the buttons wasn't very controllable. I was just taking the pressure reading and drawing a bar graph and then various people would have a go at trynig to press the button with 50% pressure or with 25% pressure, etc. Nobody could really manage much accuracy and it proved difficult to input a steady pressure, so it felt a lot like you'd really only be able to split it into two levels or such. eg. pressed lightly and pressed hard, but nothing particularly useful.

The amount of times the gun didn't fire on MGS not to mention hold up's with the AK where impossible, I'm glad to see it go.
