Nintendo has told MCV that the 3DS is now outselling the PS3 and Xbox 360 on a weekly basis. The handheld has apparently been outperforming the Microsoft and Sony home consoles over the last three months, though the report doesn't make clear whether this has happened every single week or just represents a general trend.
"Software sells hardware" James Honeywell, Nintendo UK's head of consumer marketing, told MCV.
"You must have heard that from us a lot. And the same can be said for Wii U as we move into peak season. With such a strong line-up of titles that are so critically acclaimed, it is just a perfect storm. It has made it the format of the moment.
"Sometimes 3DS, or handheld in general, suffers because people tend to focus on the home console market. But 3DS is really doing the numbers right now."
It helps, of course, that PS4 and Xbox One are soon to supplant their predecessors.
The 3DS's performance here reflects what we see in
NPD's June figures, with the 3DS having topped the hardware charts in the US thanks in part to software such as
Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
