Microsoft's Games With Gold initiative - announced at E3 to counter Sony's incredibly popular PlayStation Plus subscription service - has officially launched today, with the first free title available to download this week. That title is XBLA tower defence game Defense Grid: The Awakening.Doesn't sound incredibly exciting, but remember that two titles that will be offered on the service later this year are
Halo 3 and
Assassin's Creed 2. Although these games were highlighted at Microsoft's E3 conference, Major Nelson
has clarified that no date has actually been set for their graduation into Games With Gold.
The Games With Gold promotion offers Xbox Live Gold customers two free Xbox 360 games a month, until the end of the year. After the games are downloaded, an Xbox Live Gold subscription is not required to continue playing them.
