The Force appears strong in EA today, as the mega-publisher has just established a new DICE studio in Los Angeles for the purpose of working on Star Wars games.DICE LA will be a 'key cog' in EA's plans for expansion into the franchise, according to a new report in the
Wall Street Journal. The
Battlefield publisher recently
struck a deal with Disney to exclusively work on Star Wars games for the foreseeable future.
Not only will the new studio help in the development of DICE - arguably EA's star outfit, having created the Frostbite engine that is now used across all of the publisher's titles - but it will also help in seeing off competitors, "with the goal of poaching talent from rivals like Activision Blizzard."
DICE’s general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson said that establishing a new studio in LA was a no-brainer, referencing Activision studios such as Treyarch and Infinity Ward. "There is an extreme talent pool over that we want a part of. It’s no secret that our main competitor is there."
The LA studio will add 60 staff by the end of 2013, and it has been reported that employees of
Medal of Honor: Warfighter developer Danger Close have been adopted into the fold, along with 'outside talent.'
