It looks like the key battlefield for the next-generation console war will be Europe. A Sony Computer Entertainment source has reportedly said that the company intends to do everything in its power to maintain dominance in the region. That means ensuring a 2013 launch for the PlayStation 4.While the US is a territory dominated by Microsoft - the Xbox 360 has sold 40 million units to the PS3's 25 million in the region - Sony is aware that its rival has gained ground in the UK and aims to expand its grip on the rest of Europe with its next console. According to
CVG, Sony is "prepared to do whatever it takes" to stop that from happening.
The CVG report cites Microsoft's recent hiring of former Sony executive Phil Harrison as cause for concern in the PlayStation camp. Harrison was a key player in boosting the PS1 and PS2's fortunes in the UK and Europe. It adds that Sony has "learned hard lessons from the [Xbox] 360's first-mover advantage."
Microsoft is set to formally unveil its next Xbox console at an event on May 21. While Sony has been on the charm offensive with its PlayStation 4 since February, it is also clearly aware that its US rival could prove to be a worthy opponent if it considers Europe a viable expansion territory.
Whatever the case, E3 is going to be very exciting indeed.
