Want to hear the latest next-gen rumour? Of course you do! Word on the street is that Microsoft has secured itself "one hell of an exclusive" for the next Xbox console - Respawn Entertainment's mystery scfi-fi game.A report on
Kotaku cites unnamed sources that say the game is destined for a release on the next-generation Xbox and Xbox 360 only. While it's not certain whether the next Xbox will require an internet connection to function, it is said that Respawn's game will be always-online.
According to the sources, Respawn's game is a multiplayer-focused shooter that pits one team of soldiers against another team of large mechs. "To keep the action balanced, game maps limit the number of Titans that can be used in a skirmish. Weapon loadouts for the foot soldiers are designed to ensure that the characters on foot can take out the Titans [mechs] if need be," reads the report.
While it's all very exciting news for those who like to play to the rhythm of the console war drums, one has to take a step back and wonder what this really means for the massmarket, if true. Do the many millions who buy
Call of Duty recognise the link between Infinity Ward and Respawn? And if not, are Microsoft/EA willing to dilute Respawn's new IP by constantly referring to the franchise in its promotional material?
All in all, it's one nice coup for Microsoft - whether it will resonate to 'killer apps' or translate to the same sales that
Call of Duty enjoys is another matter entirely. But as with all rumours, take this with a large vat of salt.
