Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, at the ripe old age of 74, has announced that he will retire in June of this year. Reported by Japanese Journal, Mainichi News, Yamauchi has said that he will stand down following the company’s annual shareholder meeting.
Though this is not the first time Yamauchi has said he’s ready to take the gold watch, it is widely thought that this time the old man of gaming will indeed step down, clearing the way for a new head.
Yamauchi, outspoken and arguably a tad eccentric, has steered the progress of Nintendo admirably. Though he has suffered heavy criticism from time to time, the fact that Nintendo is the most profitable gaming outfit in the world is testament to the fact that he is an astute businessman and strategist.
It is likely that Nintendo’s Mr Iwata will take the reigns as company president, though Shigeru Miyamoto is also fancied by some.
