Microsoft: Retail Needs to Fit into Shift Towards Digital
Ever wondered why many games don't launch day-and-date on the Xbox 360's Games on Demand digital service, alongside the disc release? It's all about keeping retail partners happy, according to Microsoft's platform manager.

At the MIT Business in Games conference, Xbox Games on Demand senior business manager Erik Yeager spoke about the delay from physical to digital, and suggested that it's an issue that the company is keen to solve with the help of brick and mortar stores.

"We really strongly believe it's important to have these retail partnerships and the ability to sell our console is the most critical thing for us. If you don't sell the console, you can't sell anything else," he said.

"We have a lot of strong partnerships with retailers. We really need them to do a lot for us. They're the ones out there selling the consoles, selling the peripherals and, in this time, we're trying to figure out how to fit that in to the whole digital landscape shift. We're just taking a bit of a measured pace with it."

Right so, in other words, string the retailers along until you don't need them, then cut them loose. Have I got that about correct? I believe I do. And I didn't have to attend an MIT symposium on the topic.
